Prague – The Million Moments Association will hold a demonstration in defense of democratic institutions on Sunday, March 1, in Prague. The protest will start at 4 pm with a march from Hradčanský Street to the Old Town Square, where a demonstration will start at 5 pm. The Society thus responds to Wednesday's election of the former deputy ombudsman of the Public Defender of Rights Stanislav Křeček. The next step of the organization will be the launch of protest actions in all regional cities, which the association announces on Sunday 16 February. A million moments said it in today's press release.
“The Prague event will not be primarily a protest against Stanislav Křeček. The election of S. Křeček by the Ombudsman is a 'just' particularly blatant example of how government and major institutions are systematically and intentionally politically decomposed and privatized step by step. The KSCM and the Castle, with the assistance of a part of the CSSD, are gradually and systematically decomposing important democratic institutions that are supposed to control the rules and serve all citizens, not selected politicians, “said Million Moment.
“If this goes on, what happens in Hungary or Poland will eventually happen. Justice, the media, state administration and public procurement will be subordinate to politicians. Government politicians concretize in power by distorting the whole system, “said the chairman of the association Mikuláš Minář.
The Chamber of Deputies elected the new Ombudsman on Wednesday. MEPs selected him in the second round of the ballot. President Milos Zeman's candidate received 91 votes out of 175 votes cast and defeated the Senate nominee for the European Court of Human Rights at the European Court of Human Rights in the finals. Opposition MPs from TOP 09, ODS, KDU-CSL, Pirates and STAN criticized the outcome of the election, according to MEP Martin Kolovratnik (YES), it could have contributed to the previous statement Million moments that if hamster elected, the association will organize a demonstration. According to the association, Hamster denies the meaning of the institution of the Ombudsman.
“The public service media could be another key institution attacked very soon. The Chamber of Deputies will add new members of the Czech Television Council and the Czech Radio Council in March. According to a narrower list of candidates, there is a serious cause for concern that this could be one of the steps limiting or liquidating their independence from politicians, “he added.
