A state of terror prevailed in the corridors of the military coup, after the ruling Justice and Development Party in Turkey announced that it would submit a proposal to Parliament, today, to obtain a mandate to send troops to Libya.
The Turkish parliament was scheduled to consider this request on January 8 and 9 next, in response to an official request made by the Libyan government of reconciliation in Tripoli, to obtain Turkish military, air, land and sea support, to counter the attack of retired general Khalifa Khalifa Haftar’s forces on the Libyan capital.
The Libyan request came after Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed two memoranda of understanding on November 27th, the first related to security and military cooperation, and the second to delineating the areas of authority and influence in the Mediterranean.
The coup government was quick to submit an urgent request to the League of Arab States, today, to hold an extraordinary session of the League’s Council, to discuss the current developments in Libya.
The coup authorities claimed that the current developments and the potential for escalation portend a threat to the stability of Libya and the region, calling for an emergency meeting to take an Arab position in this regard, according to Assistant Secretary General of the League of Arab States Hussam Zaki.
The coup authorities said that the meeting aims to “restore Libya's stability through political solutions, away from external interference as soon as possible.”
The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, had expressed, on Thursday, his deep annoyance at “non-Arab interventions” in the Libyan crisis, “in order to complicate Arab and international efforts aimed at reaching an integrated political settlement to the crisis,” he said.
After Turkey announced its willingness to send military forces to support the internationally recognized national reconciliation government in Libya, in response to a request by the reconciliation government to confront the attack by the commander of eastern Libya forces, “Khalifa Haftar”, on the Libyan capital, Tripoli, with Egyptian-Emirati Russian and French support, the coup authorities acted diplomatically in a manner Fast, and Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi telephoned US President Donald Trump, Russian “Vladimir Putin”, French “Emmanuel Macron” and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte to solicit them for fear of Turkish interference in Libya.
The leader of the coup, retired Major General Khalifa Hifter, also received, yesterday, an unannounced visit. Today, the coup foreign minister, Sameh Shoukry, made a phone call to Italian Foreign Minister Luigi de Mayo, and asked him to reject foreign interference in Libya.
