The Balearic Islands have decided to ban “intoxicating tourism”. This term refers to a visit to the Spanish archipelago for the sole purpose of consuming alcohol.
Also eliminated are the so-called “drunken tours” during which local bars are toured, especially in popular parts of Majorca and Ibiza.
Local authorities have approved the implementation of a single law, which restricts alcohol consumption in the islands. This law also allows hotels to evict practicing guests balkoningjumping into the pool from the hotel room balcony. Eight foreign visitors died last year alone because of the balcony.
The law, which prescribes fines of up to € 60,000, bans any alcohol advertising, “drunken tours”, outdoor bars, happy hours at restaurants, “buy one, drink three” promotions and self-service alcohol. Boat parties will also be in the throes of the new law, and liquor sales will be banned between 9.30pm and 8am. Implementation of the measures will start immediately and they will be effective for five years.
New tourist model
Iago Negueruela, Minister of Economy, Tourism and Employment of the Balearic Islands, said the new measures are aimed directly against over tourism. They aim to promote polite and cultural behavior and the Balearic Islands as a quality destination. “We are dedicated model of sustainable tourism, and we want to enable the understanding and coexistence of tourists and locals, “the minister said.
The Balearic Islands are a popular tourist destination in Spain, with around 13 million visitors a year. The tourists are mostly young Europeans, mostly from the United Kingdom and Germany.
Balearic Islands – synonymous with cheap travel
Cheap flights and affordable prices on the islands attract young people eager for fun, which with their behavior provokes resentment and tension among the locals. The new law seeks to establish a new form of sustainable tourism and show due respect for the destination and its inhabitants.
