One year after the GR Supre's world debut, Toyota announces the details of the first sequel to its sports car series, introducing a new turbocharged 2.0-liter engine.
With the already established 3.0-liter turbo unit with six cylinders in line, the new engine on offer will provide benefits in the field of dynamics and bring the GR Supra to a wider range of customers.
The GR Supra, the first global model developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing, is a racial sports car, with front-engine / rear-wheel configuration, compact two-seater design and dimensions that achieve a “golden ratio” for optimal steering. The new 2.0-liter turbo engine expands the range of stakeholders and, while lighter and more compact than the 3.0-liter unit, enhances the car's dynamic performance and balance platform for even better steering.
Production of the new 2.0-liter GR Supra will begin shortly before launching in March.
New 2.0 liter turbo engine
The new 2.0-liter four-cylinder in-line engine, equipped with a twin-scroll turbocharger, is paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. It achieves excellent sports car performance and provides a fun and great driver experience: maximum power is 190 kW (258 hp) and maximum torque of 400 Nm, enabling acceleration from idle to 100 km / h in just 5 , 2 seconds and a maximum (electronically limited) speed of 250 km / h.
CO. EMISSIONS2 are from 135 to 144 g / km (NEDC values) and 156 to 172 g / km (WLTP results).
The smaller dimensions and reduced mass of the new engine bring special benefits to the GR Supri dynamics. When it comes to the basic model, 100 kg is lighter than its 3.0-liter predecessor. As the engine is more compact, it is positioned closer to the middle of the car, allowing an ideal front to rear ratio of 50:50. This contributes to better responsiveness and agility of the car as well as confident handling.
“To enable agile steering and steady diversion, we worked very hard to reduce the weight of the new car, targeting a 50:50 mass ratio at the same time,” said Tetsuya Tada, Chief Engineer at GR Supra: “This brought us huge challenges, but we didn't want to compromise when it comes to our goals. “
The new 2.0 liter GR Supra achieves the same “golden ratio” for optimum steering performance, quality defined by the ratio between wheelbase dimensions and the distance between the wheels of the car. For all GR Supra models, this ratio is 1.55, within the ideal range.
