If possible, the child could be given the right dishes for play, Annukka Pursi recommends. For example, discarded metal bowls and plastic buckets are well suited for this purpose as long as they are intact and have no sharp edges.

In her doctoral dissertation, Annukka Pursi investigated how many participants' play is structured in early childhood toddler groups. He found that one- and two-year-olds rarely start playing together with toys such as rattles or building blocks.
Instead, toddlers play very well through physical activity. Bouncing at the same pace or climbing together creates a sense of connection.

The stories start to get interesting
Between the ages of one and two, real toys are also becoming more and more interesting, and socially shared stories begin to form around them, says Annukka Pursi.
A variety of real-life object play is created. Small crockery sets and play kitchens are becoming more valuable when the children drink afternoon coffee and bake cupcakes.
Reality-imitating toys allow the child to develop different stories around the play as the child understands and remembers all sorts of events. Now we go shopping, drink coffee, change the baby's diaper and then put it to sleep. An adult can support play by telling a story from time to time. This can also help smaller playmates find a common key.
Baby dolls and plush toys are important from the age of one and a half or two when empathy and the ability to understand one another's feelings develop.
With age, imaginative play becomes more complex and lasts longer. Along with the playful and mimicry of toys, there are also toys that play many purposes. The building blocks are shaped like cakes in the product showcase of the café. The little knife can become a slide into the Lego House.

The child may also get bored with toys that have only one function. Many suitable toys include balls, pea bags and all the wonders of nature, such as pine trees, rocks and sticks.
On the other hand, a child may also snag a huge amount of toys that are difficult to choose from. Annukka Pursi recommends moving some toys to the warehouse temporarily. When they return to the nursery after a few weeks or months, they will feel new again.
Practicing for life
Annukka Pursi points out that although there are many theories about the developmental stages of the game, the different stages in real life do not flow seamlessly from one to the other, but they often overlap. Therefore, it is not advisable for a parent to limit the child's play or its possibilities simply because, for example, symbolic care play should not “begin” before the age of two.

Play developmental levels are somehow present at all ages, and play is also a great way to master new skills.
