The organizers of the 2020 Dimitrije Bašicevic Mangelos Award Competition have modified the application conditions to facilitate participation in times of emergency due to the virus corona epidemic.
Instead of physically delivering a printed portfolio, candidates should submit their more detailed presentations in electronic format email firstname.lastname@example.org. The material should be in PDF format (maximum 15 MB). The deadline for online submission and submission of portfolios electronically remained the same – May 6 until 5 pm. The rest of the competition's proposals remained the same, they said Overhaul – an independent art association from Belgrade and Elijah & Mangelos Fund from Novi Sad.
The “Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos” Award is given to visual artists up to the age of 35 who are actively involved in the arts. The Mangelos Prize is awarded for a personal and extraordinary multi-year work of art, which involves rounded critical and aesthetic reflection and realization, achieved in continuity. The award is given annually to an individual or individuals in the form of a residency in New York for a residency of eight weeks in collaboration with Residency Unlimited (New York) and with the support of the Trust for Mutual Understanding (New York). The Residency Unlimited award-winning residential residency for 2020 will be organized from October to November.
The Mangelos Award, which bears the name of a prominent artist, founder of conceptual art practice and art historian from the former Yugoslavia, Dimitri Bašičević MangelosAnd, this year will be awarded the 19th time.

The competition is open to artists born after December 31, 1984.
Citizens of the Republic of Serbia as well as artists who are not citizens of the Republic of Serbia but whose artistic development / professional engagement is related to the Serbian art scene may apply for the competition.
Candidates should have at least three years of professional / exhibit experience and preferably have completed at least basic studies
The artist must have at least one artwork completed during the previous two years.
Knowledge of English is required.
The competition is open from March 14 to May 6, 2020.

The portfolio should contain:
• First name, last name, e-mail address, telephone
• CV in Serbian and English
• visual material – display up to 10 works. Video works can be presented in two ways: 1) by entering the link in the appropriate place in the online form, if the video works exist on one of the video services (YouTube, Vimeo); 2) DVD / USB with work / works can be brought to the premises overhaul – independent art associations)
• texts – short explanations of works in Serbian and English (max 2000 characters with spaces per work).
The Prize – New York City Studio Residence:
The winner is provided with visa costs, health insurance, travel expenses, accommodation and per diems during his stay in New York, as well as a solo exhibition in Belgrade upon his return from New York.
Selection of winners and finalists:
The jury consists of: Katarina Kostandinović (art historian and curator, Belgrade Cultural Center), Teodora Jeremić (art historian and curator, Hestia – Art Residency and Exhibitions Bureau, Belgrade), Dejan Vasic (art critic, independent curator and editor of the art program at the Center for Cultural Decontamination, Belgrade), Natalija Vujošević (artist, curator and educator, Institute for Contemporary Art, Podgorica), Katarina Petrovic (artist and winner of the 2019 Mangelos Prize) will select up to five finalists to interview for the 2020 Mangelos Award winner.
The online application material will be available in its entirety on the Mangelos Award website after May 6, 2020.
The first jury will be held after May 20, 2020. The second round of juries and interviews with the finalists (in Serbian and English) will be organized after July 1, 2020.

The Dimitrije Basicevic Mangelos Award is part of the Young Visual Artists Awards (YVAA).
Wendy W. Luers, founder and director of the Foundation for a Civil Society, founded the Jindrich Chalupecky Prize with the then President Vaclav Havel and a group of dissident artists in Czechoslovakia in 1990, with the idea of creating younger artists has been acknowledging artistic excellence for 35 years and providing them with the experience of a residency in the U.S. With the support of the New York-based Trust for Mutual Understanding, the YVAA program has been developed over the years as an international network of similar awards, including: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Slovenia, Slovakia and Serbia.
Residency Unlimited has been the organizer of the YVAA program and has hosted residency residencies in New York since 2015.
Residency Unlimited (RU) is dedicated to the presentation, production and promotion of contemporary art through numerous activities within residential and public programs. Located in Brooklyn, RU functions as a kind of hub, a dynamic space where artists, curators, art professionals, exhibitions, screenings and discursive programs meet.
