Animal Crossing New Horizons has already had dizzying numbers within a week of its release. According to the numbers reported in the past few days by the Famitsu editorial staff, the latest chapter of the Animal Crossing brand has sold 1.88 million physical copies only in Japan, not to mention all the digital versions. The new exclusive for Nintendo Switch has also marked a better debut than Pokémon Sword and Shield.
The eighth-generation Pokémon titles had made the mark best launch for Nintendo Switch so far, with over 1.36 million copies sold in Japan. Animal Crossing New Horizons managed to break this record thanks to historical fans and also thanks to newcomers intrigued by the new chapter for the Nintendo hybrid console.
In addition to breaking the debut record marked by Pokémon Sword and Shield, Animal Crossing New Horizons has destroyed every debut of the previous chapters of its franchise. The title has sold in Japan more than twice as much as Animal Crossing New Leaf was released in 2012 on Nintendo 3DS.
Meanwhile, Nintendo Switch sold 392,576 units during the week of March 16-22, bringing total console sales to 12.8 million units in Japan.
