As promised, today, March 24, Apple released the final version of iOS 13.4. The company took almost two months and six beta testing stages to test and debug it. Now the update can already be downloaded by the owners of all compatible devices, because, probably, everyone will find in it something useful for themselves. Despite the fact that, most likely, this is the last major update that shines for us until the release of iOS 14, it includes such a number of innovations that it was quite possible to divide them in half and release the remaining half of iOS 13.5.
How to connect a mouse or trackpad to iPad
The first and perhaps most important innovation of iOS 13.4 is, of course, the extended support for external input devices. To do this, Apple had to not only teach the iPad to work with the trackpad, but add a clear interface with hot keys to the system for improved interaction with plug-in keyboards, as well as an updated cursor.
The cursor from iPadOS 13.4, unlike the computer one, appears on the screen only when a small number of actions are performed, such as typesetting, and the rest of the time remains hidden. At the same time, when you hover over applications in the Dock, the cursor itself will also not appear, however, the icons will slightly modify their shape, indicating that they are selected. The same thing works when you hover over the control elements of the program interface.
To turn on the cursor on an iPad with iPadOS 13.4 installed, it’s not necessary to buy a Magic Keyboard for 30 thousand rubles, all the more so that it is compatible only with the last two generations of the iPad Pro. It will be enough to connect to the tablet either Apple's Magic Trackpad, which comes bundled with the iMac or iMac Pro, or the Magic Mouse, or an ordinary wireless mouse. True, before this, the peripherals must be disconnected from the computer.
In addition, Apple has simplified the work with hot keys. Now iPad users with connected keyboards will be able to call up the entire list of available commands in each application by pressing the Cmd key. At the same time, all available combinations and actions that can be performed by pressing several keys at once will be displayed on the screen. If necessary, you can create your own and modify existing combinations.
How to share iCloud folder
The ability to share access to folders in iCloud Drive was promised to users back in June last year at the WWDC conference. More than six months have passed since then, and this opportunity has appeared only now. Apparently, in Cupertino, they encountered some difficulties in developing the shared access function, and therefore decided to postpone it for the last time.
To share access to an entire folder or a specific file, you need to go to the “Files” application – iCloud Drive, find the desired object, then click on it and hold your finger until the context menu appears, in which you select “Share”. Now it remains only to select the user and send him a link to the file in any convenient way, at least by e-mail, at least in the messenger, at least by SMS.
After that, all users who gain access to the folder or file will be able not only to monitor the changes that occur, but also to edit them independently, making the necessary changes. This is very convenient in a situation where several employees are working on the text of the same document or of the same presentation. You don’t even have to meet in person for that in the spread of coronavirus very very comfortable.
How CarKey Works
The CarKey interface, which serves to open the doors in the car and start the engine, was perhaps the most unexpected innovation in iOS 13.4. Despite the fact that Apple has studied this topic for a long time and issued many patents describing the operation of the technology, no one expected that the company would decide to launch it so soon. However, strictly speaking, she did not dare, because CarKey can still not be used anywhere and by anyone.
In practice, this innovation should work like this: the user writes a virtual car key to the iPhone via NFC and saves it to Wallet. From there, the key can be transferred to another user, for example, a family member, using iMessage. Probably, the transfer can be carried out in other ways, but, judging by the description of the function from the OS code, so far only a regular messenger serves this purpose. The only thing that does not allow you to use the iPhone as a key is the lack of compatible cars.
General purchases for iOS and macOS
Today, Apple has made it possible for developers to unify purchases in the App Store and Mac App Store. This means that now, having bought a program or game for iOS, you will get it on a Mac. Since today most of the software available in the App Store and Mac App Store is distributed by subscription, most likely many developers will take this step, because this will allow them to increase their reach and thereby earn more money.
Even if the application is free, this does not mean that it does not bring anything to its creator – in the end, then he would have gone bankrupt and quickly closed his shop. Indeed, as they say in such cases: if you do not pay for the product, it means that the product is you, because you are watching ads. And if the same user watches ads on all their devices once, this will clearly increase the developer’s income.
Not only applications will become common, but also in-app purchases. At first glance, this is negative news for developers, but given that users will have the opportunity to use the same application or game on all their devices, there is a big chance that purchases will begin to be made more often. As a result, both will benefit.
What else is new in iOS 13.4
- Changing the layout of controls in the Mail application;
- New memoji;
- OS recovery function by air (does not work);
- Quality setting tool in Apple TV application when downloading via LTE;
- The ability to enable or disable the announcement of messages directly in the Control Center;
- The function “Always listen to Siri” now recognizes commands, even if the smartphone is lying face down or covered with something from above;
- Siri received support from the “Get Home Screen” team;
- There is a new animation of enabling VPN in the status bar;
- The “karaoke” function in Apple Music now displays a special waiting icon during playback so that you don’t start singing ahead of time;
- Now you can open links in Safari with a 3D Touch gesture in the same tab.
How many new features for one update, right? I admit that this is not all the innovations. In any case, we have yet to test iOS 13.4 for autonomy, speed and bugs. And the last ones in iOS 13.3.1 were in order. It got to the point that even Elon Musk, who usually does not speak out on such issues, expressed his indignation at the work of Apple and hinted to her that it would be nice to dilute the development team at least occasionally so as not to impede progress with a blinded look.
