The Haapsalu City Government has decided to leave the Christmas decorations and the Christmas tree at Lossiplatsi until the end of January to lighten the darkness a little bit.
According to Alo Lõps, Head of Haapsalu City Maintenance, firs and Christmas decorations have been kept until the end of January in the years when it was dark. “Unless the storm breaks it down,” Lõps moaned. A strong storm pushed the Christmas tree of Haapsalu Castle down in January 2018.
However, the townspeople's domestic firs will be harvested by January 20th. The city has 17 places, where the fir can be taken. Lõps said the firs have been brought to the collection points and have been taken away by the city maintenance. The firs are transported to the town maintenance branch, where they are shredded.
No public firing of firs and sculpture of fires is planned this year. According to Tõnu Parbus, Head of Public Relations at Haapsalu, people have changed at the Ridala Society of the NGO Ridala, which has organized an activity at the Parila schoolhouse for two years and will not organize a fire event this year. The town also offered the opportunity to make fire sculptures for the Rannarootsi Museum, but they were not interested in organizing them either.
