There is a sneak peep into the coronation debate in Denmark. One begins to see the risk that it conveniently also deals with something other than coronavirus. We welcome the closed border booms. A few extra paragraphs are sneaking into (urgent) bills to help slightly more foreigners out of the country. And so on.
Let's concentrate on the essentials. Let's do what it takes to get through the corona outbreak as safely as possible – neither more nor less. Let us develop and implement a sensible plan to re-open the country in a timely manner as soon as reasonably possible. And let's make sure that the relevant professional experts have the greatest say in how to solve the task.
Let's not use the corona crisis as an alibi to ride our other little jaws. Let us not use it as an alibi to permanently restrict free movement. Let's not use it as an alibi to throw some more foreigners out of the country. Let's not use it as an alibi to permanently increase the surveillance of community citizens. And let's not use it as an alibi to concentrate more power on the government outside the Parliament.
The Corona crisis is a test of all of us, but not least of the integrity of government and top politicians. A frightened and distressed population will accept anything in the heat of battle if it is put together properly. The temptation of a government to seize the opportunity to get a few jaws through is almost too great.
The people deserve the government on a temporary basis to do what is strictly necessary here and now – no more and no less. The population also deserves a proper debate when the storm is over, about what we have learned from the crisis and what lasting changes may need to be made.
If, after a good debate and ample reflection at that time, there is a majority in the population for less free movement, fewer foreigners, more surveillance and more transfer of power from parliament to government, we must look at it at that time.
It's not okay to sneak it in the back door while people have other things to think about.
