Now, not as a political scientist, but what people I want to say (the two don’t hit each other). One of our “quarantined” compatriots who we’ve been forced into our apartment, our study, in front of our laptop, and luckily we can walk or run in our garden at most (if we have one).
I would say that I can't tell anyone, so I will tell everyone on the basis of the principle, because I see that according to the Hungarian character we often spin ourselves in quarantine, we want to accomplish and produce something at all costs, because somehow we feel that we can't be left out of anything now. we must prove that we are then the “fleetest” and most recent in this situation of force majeure.
And that is what we should not do.
Because our momentum will run out, we will quickly get tired of the spin, and it will inevitably be followed by burnout and depression. Notice: it may take a few weeks for the momentum left in us from our “outside” era, but in a month or two there will be no trace of it, but we will be exhausted, we will look forward to ourselves and do not know what to do with ourselves.
That is why let us slow down now and operate ourselves on a saving flame. Only in this way will we have a chance to sustain ourselves after several weeks, several months. Because now really not the best – two weeks and we'll be together again, partying! – but let's start with the worst variation. Now, the “optimism” (which, of course, is not) of naive and unfounded, undefeated two-year-olds is downright harmful and dangerous because it threatens to collapse later. No: let’s settle for the fact that for months, this karate existence will characterize our lives.
This unexpected “shocked time” is truly an opportunity for us people as individuals and as a community. To finally pay attention to ourselves: how we have lived so far, whether we have noticed the important things in life, or whether we have really only been preoccupied with everyday questions of detail. Can we still think in its entirety, and not just in detail. To quote St. Paul’s words, can we still turn our fragmented knowledge into the ability to see from color to color.
To look around and ask: who do we live with and how? What kind of friends do we have and how much are they actually worth? Is the work we’re doing good for us, or is it clear now that we don’t really feel like it? Can we give true love or just awkward smiles?
As I wrote earlier, this is a time of rehearsals for the individual, for all of us. We measure whether we still have a human face in the sense of László Nagy, or whether we are only capable of artificial manners learned from elsewhere.
But all of this requires silence, not a forced continuation of the rattling noise. And intelligence.
That’s why I ask you, musicians and artists, not to want to put something on Youtube or Face every day, don’t want to entertain us every day, high-profile, because you won’t be able to bear that, and you’ll end up bored in the end. Don’t strain, we won’t forget you, even if you don’t make series of lots and lots of parts – you’re great artists without it! You have already shared great things with the people of the country, you don’t have to step this up to heaven because it will backfire.
And I ask you, scientists, analysts, experts who are constantly speaking in better times, do not want to understand everything now, do not want to become an epidemiological expert just to be there in public every day. Now is the time to understand: less is more, and no one will forget you, calm down – take advantage of the unexpected free time to read books that have been postponed for a long time, to fill them up, to deepen your knowledge. When, if not now?
And of course I beg you, lousy, confident people who think you can’t get in trouble, so you throw up at the rules and restrictions, almost bluntly, with the apparent “superiority” that only the weak and clumsy are the ones who are scared of something világjárványtól. Do not provoke those who follow the rules, for they know of themselves that God has not blessed them with bison organization, iron-hard toughness, acorn health. (In the heights of Trump.) They can't make sure they're not like you, perfect. Engrave this in your brain. But there is more to it than that: this is the case when, if you cannot give in to your big face, you testify to your incredible selfishness. Because now you have a responsibility to your loved ones and fellow human beings.
And whatever sore: relatives, family members, not to get together or even gather at Easter. I know, I know: what does it look like that the kinship doesn’t water each other? But not! Once again, we are at the point of intelligence: families need to keep their distance at Easter so that we can buy colognes for many more Easter, sprinkle girls and women, and carve over and over again more imaginative or awkward watering poems…
So I want to say that even if we are full of energy, we Hungarians do not overcompensate the situation. This is a crisis, let us not compete with each other here now, as in offices, trainings, while working. Or let’s compete in one thing: helpfulness and empathy for each other. Our human relationships are measured, and it is possible, some of them now turn out not to work, that they only worked as long as the noise, the spin obscured the shallowness of the relationships, and when silence comes, it turns out that it is not meaningful silence, but emptiness congo silence.
Yes: now things are separating that we used to think – because it was so convenient – that they are together. (I read that the number of divorce lawsuits in China has risen sharply since the virus epidemic subsided.) But we may be able to consolidate our human relationships right now because we are now noticing in the other one the hitherto unexplored benevolence, hidden love.
So: let's find each other. There is no better time to do that.
And let's learn to relax now. And when “normal” times return, let’s not forget what we’ve learned now.
