Washington – US State of New York reported 630 more deaths from covid-19 and over 10,800 newly infected with coronavirus on the last day. Both data are the largest 24-hour increments so far. The American Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that Americans help reduce the spread of coronavirus by using cloth drapes. This was announced by US President Donald Trump. He stressed, however, that such a face masking is not mandatory, and pointed out that he did not intend to do it himself. The latest data from the American Johns Hopkins University, according to AFP, showed that the number of coronavirus deaths in the US has risen to 7406, with a record 1480 deaths within 24 hours of Thursday to Friday evening.
“It will be a voluntary thing. You can do it, you don't have to do it,” the US president said about covering the face. “I choose not to do that,” he added. He subsequently justified his position by attending high-level meetings. “I accept presidents, prime ministers, dictators, kings, queens,” he pointed out.
Trump also signed a decree ordering the cessation of the export of N95-type masks and other protective equipment needed to combat coronavirus, Reuters writes.
In the Czech Republic, the wearing of drapes is mandatory in principle everywhere away from home. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis even called on Trump last weekend to be inspired by the Czech procedure and also to introduce obligatory wearing of masks in the US. Babis also sent a video calling for the wearing of masks to most European presidents and prime ministers.
World Health Organization (WHO) representative Michael Ryan said on Friday that he would be more widespread in home-made drapes. According to the emergency aid coordinator, covering the nose and mouth to protect from coughing or sneezing is not a bad idea.
Even at the beginning of the week, Ryan was more skeptical about the drapes and did not recommend them unless one was infected. But opponents responded that many people cannot themselves know if they are infected.
New York has so far recorded the highest number of deaths and infections
New York State reported 630 more deaths from covid-19 and over 10,800 newly infected with coronavirus last day. Both data are the largest 24-hour increments so far. In a state that is an epicenter of a pandemic in the US, 113,704 people have already infected the virus and 3565 have succumbed. Governor Andrew Cuomo said it at a press briefing today.
New York, with less than 20 million inhabitants, has surpassed over one billion mainland China, where the virus appeared for the first time at the end of last year, after the data reported today. He had more infected already on Wednesday.
According to Cuoma, the pandemic in the state has not yet reached its peak, which means that the increase in the number of infected and deceased will increase in the coming days. “I would like the peak to be tomorrow,” the governor remarked, adding that the number of infected is now growing fastest on Long Island.
At the same time, he added that New York is currently not ready for the peak of the pandemic. In fact, in the state, beds in hospitals are quickly running out, which, moreover, still face a shortage of medical staff. The state expects the biggest influx of infected people within a week.
However, according to statistics, two thirds of all hospitalized patients with covid-19 have already returned home. Only a third requires longer treatment. “This is what we have said from the beginning. Most people will not have to go to the hospital. Those hospitalized will come, receive treatment, and leave,” the governor said.
