Volkswagen will not make the R version of the Polo supermini because of low interest, according to the head of the R department at German company Jost Kapito. He said that there was interest, but that it was not enough and that sales of such a model would be small and costs high.
Volkswagen has recently enhanced the R family with the T-Roc R and Touareg R models, and even the electric family ID will have such a version.
“That would not work for Polo – when we look at what clients have in this segment. There is interest, but the number would be small and the costs too high“Said Kapito.
The newest member of the R family will be the eighth-generation Golf and it will be the smallest model in the brand's most powerful machine range.
The speculation about launching the Pola R series production has been going on since 2014, when Volkswagen announced that it would not happen. Enthusiasts' hopes were re-awakened in 2017, when Ralf Keling, director of the small models department in Volkswagen, said there was enough room in the engine compartment for accessories. Back then, speculation was made about the Polo R with about 300hp.
