Doom Eternal doesn't have a deathmatch. In any other game it would not arouse such upheaval, but here we are talking about the forefather of multiplayer shooter, the founder of the legendary mode “all against all”. Nor will you find team deathmatch, capture the flag, or any other classic fashion you would expect from old-school carving. Instead, the creators came up with a brand new, unusually asymmetric Battlemode mode. How to play?
The idea of Battlemode is in 2v1 matches. On the one hand there are two players in the hellers' skins, on the other there is one player as Doom Slayer. The hellers can war in the skin of Revenant, Mancub, Pain Elemental, Marauder, or Archvil, and in addition they call artificial intelligence-controlled imps, hell knights or arachnotrons. On the other hand, Doom Slayer relies on himself and his entire arsenal of weapons. So no excuses for incompetent comrades! That it stinks of imbalance? Both when.
Marine in online hell
Studio id Software has been told that the goal of this new (and only one!) Multiplayer mode is to bring the story campaign experience to the online world. And the truth is that when you play Doom Slayer, you are raging again in arenas full of demons, trampolines and trapezes, once again you have to level everything down and feel like an untamed force again. That is, until you come across two at least a bit of opponents in the skin of the demons. On the contrary, they tame you quite quickly…
It is too early to make definitive judgments over the (un) balance of Doom Eternal multiplayer, but I rarely find myself in a match where Doom Slayer would win against a wave of hellers. It may be that Doom Eternal came out just a few days ago, and people were wryingly embarking on multiplayer before they were really singing in single player.
As Doom Slayer you have (almost) everything from the story campaign, ie. eight weapons, two types of grenades, flamethrower, fist punch and motorcycle. Personally, however, I have a single criss-crossed, and yet I did not wave the victorious flag very often.
The frequent victories of the demons are, in my experience, simply and simply because the hellers have a tremendous superiority. A single demon-player has no chance against a single player-Doomguy, but this scenario is rare. The maps are not large and at least a bit literate demons-players will fall down on Doomguye at once and invite AI mates several times a minute.
Paradoxically, minions can help Doom Slayer, as an experienced harvester will knock out armor, health, and ammunition. In practice, however, the lone player is more likely to be trampled (unless you come across a clockner, your demonic ego will cry). Even though the marine man catches a glory kill or a motorcycle murder, a capable demonic player activates the loot block capability, leaving the man just dry from his nose.
The basic rule of a successful online Doom Slayer is as follows: Cough the bushes around and focus on your two main goals. Use other daemons only as a source of supplies. It has proven to hurt the enemy demons first and then arrive at one.
After the death of the first, a 20-second countdown starts, after which the dead demonic player returns to the half-health cat. I have repeatedly experienced a situation where a marine has picnured one demon and the other took his feet on his shoulders – which is very good because the demon sees the player's silhouette through the walls. After a while the first demon respawn and the marine immediately got after the nose. Reliable tactics for hell victory.
First down, then only add
Jumping into a new multiplayer head is not a good idea. Modern multiplayer Doom is no longer just about running, jumping and shooting. A number of new drives have been added. Touch Doom Slayer in a single, five playable demons in a handy tutorial. Everyone controls themselves differently.
Most of all, Marauder resembles normal playing for Doom Slayer because he has the same quick dodges and a double-barreled shotgun. On the contrary, such Pain Elemental flies through the air and offers a completely different experience. This jagged ball does not devastate any crushing wound, and yet it is a relatively slow, clearly visible target. On the other hand, super has an overview of the battlefield and can well support his partner on the ground if you play with a real partner, not an internet anonymous. Therefore, I recommend using private cats – for a full-fledged match you only need three people, and you can assemble.
Every daemon has different attacks, plus a set of special abilities, ranging from minion-inducing, healing to creating gambling zones. Each of these skills reloads after a while, although in practice they are so hard that you press the skill buttons almost as often as the trigger. Not much, and it certainly requires some exercise. It would be a mistake to think that you just jump into Battlemod and play at full speed.
Matches usually last no more than a quarter of an hour and are played with three winners. Several times we actually got to the score of 2: 2 and thus into a pretty good fifth round. Over time, the games are increasing, as you can choose to upgrade in each round. More health, quicker recovery, summoning a hellish baron or even the BFG-9000 … It depends on who you play. I personally liked the rage in the skin of Marauder and the hell of a baron. At that moment, Doom was always reveling Slayer.
Like the single, Doom Eternal's multiplayer is a brisk rodeo. Even more so than in a campaign, it is important to sprint, jump and reduce your opponent's chances of being pinched. But only about your mobility and accurate sight is not the local multiplayer. It's also about making good use of special abilities, which moves the net online shooter to a slightly tactical genre. And it's up to you whether this suits you or you'd rather a classic arena deathmatch with a few guns and nothing else. You won't find the other one here.
The single above all
From a technical point of view, id Software is not happy with recycling single player arenas and has built six new maps for the online world. They will also be pleased with lightning matchmaking with waiting times of tens of seconds (not to say, Steam reported 100,000 simultaneous players immediately after release). Minor lagging I noticed only in one match, which I blame bad connection opponent. In short, everything goes well.
Developers have also integrated into Battlemode all today's serepetičky such as collecting experience points, leveling, unlocking new skins, etc. Interestingly, in the future they promise new maps, playable demons and long-term support at all ).
I want to believe that multiplayer in Doom Eternal really has a future. Doom Eternal celebrates sales success, and most importantly, compared to the previous episode, where the development of online games was outsourced to another studio, Battlemode is wholly in the hands of id Software.
I admire the authors' decision to come up with an unusual asymmetric online mode, playing demons is really quite different, and with a good partner it is also amusingly fun. I also appreciate the effort of the creators to transfer the single-player experience to the multiplayer – playing for Doomguy really evokes the single-player on the Nightmare difficulty, even if it depends on the opponents. But…
… Yet I miss the classic arena deathmatch. In such a playable shooter with such fun weapons would be simply great. So for me Doom Eternal remains primarily a top single player action. Thanks to the authors for Battlemode, it was nice to try it, but now I better go back to Master Levels on higher difficulty.
