SOS animal became an assistant in the lawsuit against bullfight rider João Moura for mistreatment of animals. The bullfighter was constituted accused of the crime of mistreating dogs that he creates. Moura denied all accusations of mistreatment of the animals he was caring for and which were removed from him by the GNR.
In a statement sent to the newsrooms, SOS Animal identifies the bullfighter as “the biggest greyhound breeder in the country, is one of the main promoters of dog racing in Portugal”.
“SOS Animal's vision on animal welfare is clear: races stimulated by negative training, mistreatment and exploitation of dogs for financial benefits or for human entertainment is wrong”, it can be read in the statement that says that the accused incurs two breaches of the law – mistreatment of animals and abandonment. The representation of SOS Animal will be in charge of the lawyer António Garcia Pereira.
João Moura risks up to two years in prison for letting his dogs go hungry.
One of the 18 malnourished dogs that, on Wednesday, were apprehended from rider João Moura, died during transport to a shelter in Palmela. Another dog apprehended from the bullfighter is still in a critical condition.
The bullfighting rider was arrested on Wednesday for suspected animal abuse in Monforte, in the district of Portalegre, following a search warrant for his property, 18 dogs were seized. The detention took place following an investigation carried out by the Nature and Environment Protection Service (SEPNA).
João Moura was constituted accused and subject to a term of identity and residence, having been interrogated this afternoon, in the scope of the investigation, by an attorney of the Public Prosecutor in the Court of Portalegre.
Two petitions are being circulated against the bullfighting rider João Moura, accused of mistreatment of animals. In total and until 5:45 pm on Friday, the two documents collected more than 15,000 signatures.
The petition with the most signatures is named “Condemnation of the 'knight' João Moura” and is addressed to GNR, the Public Ministry, the Portuguese League for Animal Rights and the non-governmental organization PeTA. The signatories ask the referred entities and organizations “the decision of the Court and the consequent penalty for the acts committed”. In addition, they defend the suspension of “all activities related to bullfighting”.
The other petition, “I want to see the bullfighter João Moura arrested”, addressed to the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Ferro Rodrigues, defends “preventive detention” for the bullfighter for the “such malice” committed with his animals.
