Exhibition “Missing Stories. Forced labor during the Nazi occupation. Artist's View ”, created as part of the Goethe Institute's international art project in Serbia, opened on February 21st at the Salon of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, featuring works by ten artists from Germany, Serbia, Albania and Montenegro.
An insight into forced labor in the Third Reich was provided by artists: Burkhard Shield i Christian Herl from Germany, Alexander Zograf, Milorad Mladenovic, an art duo DISTRUCTURE i Dragan Vojvodic from Serbia, Ivan Salatic i Lenka Đorojević from Montenegro, and Donika Cina i Remy Pronya from Albania.
Project Exhibition “Missing Stories“is the result of the collaboration of the curator Of Thomas Elzen (Augsburg Art Collections and Museums: H2 – Contemporary Art Center, Augsburg), Une Popovic from MSUB, Sanja Kojic Mladenov from the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina in Novi Sad, Adele Demetja from Tirana Art Lab in Tirana and Natalije Vujošević from the National Museum of Montenegro in Cetinje.
The topic of forced labor during the Nazi occupation, according to the curators, is insufficiently present in the collective memory of the Balkans – there is little documentation, even less public events and discussions on the subject, and this tragic chapter of European history is completely omitted in textbooks and history teaching. On the other hand, many families remember the fates of their ancestors who were forced to work in Germany and other occupied territories during the occupation, whether in factories, labor camps or agriculture. As a result, the destinies of forced laborers are also present in the individual memory of the present generation, and are in a particular way experienced by artists and intellectuals.
The works of the artists participating in the Missing Stories project have been performed in various media – from photography, video, through painting to audio-visual installations. Some of the artists found inspiration in the experiences of their ancestors who were forced laborers during the Nazi occupation.
The works selected for the Missing Stories exhibition in 2020 will be presented in all countries of origin of the artist – except in Belgrade, the project will be presented in Novi Sad, Tirana, Podgorica and Berlin and Augsburg.
The exhibit will be open at the MSUB Salon until March 30.
The project was implemented with the support of the German foundation “Memory, responsibility, future” (EVZ).
