MILAN – We are experiencing a very particular period. These weeks of forced isolation are testing us but they have also made us discover the value of time and technology that has become our window on the outside world. Groupon wanted to carry out a survey – which involved around 2,500 users across Europe, including Italians – to understand how our compatriots are dealing with the large amount of free hours and if they are using them in constructive and tech-friendly activities, such as online courses. Parallel to improving staff and the desire to satiate their curiosity with courses, Italians take the opportunity to have time available to finalize purchases related to the home and themselves.
Italians always curious and active, even #acasa
From the data emerges all the will of the Italians to keep active and to learn something new. From the beginning to the end of March, in fact, the number of coupons relating to the e-learning courses purchased on Groupon increased by 137%.
In Europe, Italians are the most enterprising and lead the ranking with 62% of those in favor of starting an online course, followed by the United Kingdom and the Netherlands (59%), Germany (57%), Spain (54) %) and France (26%).
The identikit of the e-learner
Despite being extremely committed to smart-working, family and home management, women are the most active (60%), who intend to engage in a new course.
Surprisingly, the age group between 45 and 54 years (29% of respondents) is the most eager to learn thanks to technology. Also significant are the 19% between 54 and 65% who see e-learning as an opportunity and 4% of those over 65 who, while remaining active, do not let themselves be frightened by technology.
Why start studying at home?
Italians want to start an online course especially to improve themselves (62%) or professionally (60%). With this latter preference, they prove to be among the most attentive to their career compared to the rest of Europe where the average of those who choose e-learning to improve at work is 56%.
There is also a good 29% whose priority is keeping active and 17% of onlookers who use the web to try something new; motivation among the most important for the United Kingdom (42%).
Fun, then, is not among the first thoughts of the Italians who report it among the latest motivations (11%), unlike France (23%) and the United Kingdom (22%) which reveal the nations with the most desire to distracted.
What Italians study online
But which are the most popular areas of interest? At the top of the list are foreign language courses (55%), followed by business courses (32%) confirming the attention on the professional sphere; not surprisingly, for these two types of courses, Italians are willing to invest a maximum of € 100 and € 186 respectively. In third position we see health and wellness lessons (29%), to try to keep fit during the days of sedentary lifestyle. Great success also for coaching (25%) and psychology and pedagogy (16%), probably chosen to react to this unprecedented situation.
There are also those who want to take advantage of it to take care of house plants with gardening courses (9%) or those who want to learn to play a musical instrument (9%). There is no shortage of beauty addicts who, desperate for the closure of the beauty centers, decide to go to “do it yourself” and start courses for beautician and hairdresser (5%).
