They caught Italy’s “circling” bear on Tuesday: the animal was dating in the province of Trento in northern Italy nine months after escaping from a cage.
Foresters used a so-called pipe trap to capture the 167-pound brown bear in the mountains near Tione di Trento and then transport it to an animal welfare center, the local press reported.
The roughly four-year-old predator, which escaped from an area surrounded by an electric fence and wall last July, has also caused significant damage to farmers and livestock farmers. And after the winter dream, again, several animals were torn apart by a bear that the foresters said was in good condition.
Already last summer, the Italian government was already addressing the problem caused by the bear: after County President Maurizio Fugatti ordered his shooting, despite environmentalists' opposition, Environment Minister Sergio Costa banned the killing of the bear.
The number of brown bears is increasing in the Autonomous Province of Trento, with predators killing more animals in recent months. The county is demanding more freedom in capturing and shooting dangerous animals.
