Crossovers Changan CS55 and Chery Tiggo 7 are similar in size, they are painted as if from one can and are decorated according to a single canon up to plastic overlays of the lower perimeter. But Chery is cheaper. If we take the basic configuration with the “mechanics”, then already 130 thousand rubles after the rise in price of “fifty-fifth” to 1,329,900. The two-pedal top versions are used in the test. According to statistics, buyers of Chinese technology do not skimp, choosing rich equipment at times more often simplified.
If the country of origin is embarrassing, simply cover your logo with your palm. Without a “bird” on the radiator grill, the CS55 is quite suitable for some SsangYong or even Kia. The tilt of the rear pillar makes Changan look like a thoroughbred Discovery Sport. And you can’t blame plagiarism: non-obvious borrowings are successfully inscribed in the image of a weighted average modern SUV. Not the original, but not fake.
Still, the workmanship should be pulled up to the world level. I can close my eyes to the difference in the gaps between the doors and a slight skew of the trunk lid. However, due to the uneven thickness of the mother-of-pearl glaze on the Chang'an body (oh, this hard sign!), Bald spots glow. And the lack of coloring of the inner edges of the body directly indicates savings. The lack of surcharge for such “metallic” is comforting little.
Tiggo 7 is assembled better, not worse than the same “Koreans”. In the appearance, created by James Hope, already resigned from Chery, there were no explicit quotes, although the original “seven” can not be called. Perplexity is mainly caused by the selection of power units. The base crossover with the “mechanics” is equipped with a modern one and a half liter turbo engine with a capacity of 152 hp, while under the hood of expensive versions with a variator (from 1,279,900 rubles) an old two-liter aspirated engine develops 122 forces.
When moving up the Tiggo 7 model range, the buyer also loses comfortable armchairs with cloth upholstery. And the seats of the Elite and Elite Plus versions trimmed with perforated leatherette are too soft and shapeless. The driver’s landing problem is complicated by the steering column without adjustment for departure. A forward visibility is hindered by wide body racks. At the same time, large side mirrors provide good control of what is happening behind.
The Tiggo has an all-round visibility system with a function for monitoring blind spots in the area of the front wheels. The cameras in the mirror housings are activated when the turn signal is turned on. A good help when maneuvering in tight parking lots, even despite the mediocre picture quality. In addition, in the dark, when steering is deflected, additional cornering light is activated. Moreover, both foglights flash at once, covering the entire sector in front of the hood.
At CS55, the only side camera monitors the starboard side and is activated forcibly by a button next to the transmission selector. But the front struts are thinner, and the coverage of the side mirrors is even wider. But the look of the front seats is annoying: the upholstery seems to be made up of dermatine scraps of different shades, connected in places by uneven seams. But the filler is denser here, the pillow is longer, and the profile of the back is more successful – it’s comfortable to sit. Including due to the ability to push the steering wheel toward you.
The ergonomics of Chang'an are generally commendable. The tilted display of the media system, contrary to expectations, does not glare in the sun. The dual-zone climate control is organized logically. Alas, after a night of parking, the cabin warms up for a long time, and on trips it is constantly being cooled by charges of cool air. Having looked at the details, I understand why the interior of the CS55 was updated at home only a year and a half after the premiere. Only on the front panel, I counted seven grades of plastic: from quite nothing to frankly cheap.
The Chery semi-automatic air conditioner works more stable, and materials of a higher and more stable quality are used in the decoration. A large informative display is successfully entered between strange analogue scales. Chery does not skimp on auto mode for all power windows. At night, the front and side panels are enlivened by backlighting. Sorry, she was not enough for the glove compartment. And it’s a shame to someone who has paired the main USB-connector into a hard-to-reach niche under the console. The mission of connecting the phone is impossible.
With a wheelbase matching up to a millimeter, the CS55's rear seats are tighter. The space in front of the knees is slightly less. Because of the sunroof, the gap above the head is very small. In addition, the harsh pillow filler does not provide the same comfortable fit as the Tiggo soft ottoman. Sofa heating in the “fifty-fifth” is not provided, but for the “seven” it is two-stage, starting with the Elite version. However, passengers in the second row of Chery lack a USB port, although in Chang'an it is located next to ventilation vents.
The CS55 turbo engine is 21 power and 30 N • m superior to the Tiggo aspirated. This is felt both at partial loads, and with a fully open throttle. Sensitive reactions to the addition of traction enhance the sense of advantage. “Automatic” connects the motor well with the drive wheels, step changes are quick and barely noticeable. But demanding a kickdown on the fly, you will still encounter a hitch in a couple of seconds, while the box is determined with the transmission.
Attempts to spur Chery in pursuit of a peppy opponent result in deviations in the operation of the variator. In Eco mode, under full throttle, the engine catches the longing with a monotonous hum. Sport mode reduces the delay between fuel delivery and acceleration and is better suited for chasing. But for movement in a dense stream is harsh, and even more so for pushing in traffic jams. The Tiggo box does not offer something average.
In search of harmony one should calm down. Slow down the pace to a measured one, return to the standard variator program – and there were no problems. If you do not torment Tiggo with intense acceleration, then there seems to be nothing to criticize the transmission for. The responses to the smooth movement of the accelerator are optimal, the speed does not exceed comfortable values. And the dynamics can not be called quite lethargic. Only when driving a pull, when you have to hold the crossover with a brake, the box twitches, as if the friction clutch of the torque converter is jabbing.
The Tiggo 7 chassis was brought in with the participation of the engineering division of Lotus, which has no direct relation to the manufacturer of the same name sports car. Therefore, if the school is felt in Chery, it is only in moderate and smoothly increasing banks, as well as in a progressive change in the return force on the steering wheel when changing the steepness of the turn. But whoever was involved in adjusting the steering mechanism, he threw the matter halfway. In small angles, the electric amplifier lives its own life: the steering wheel is either too heavy, resisting the exit from zero, then suddenly empty.
I would call Chery handling good. But its flip side is a tough ride on a broken road. The Tiggo suspension does not tolerate encounters with large pits, tram tracks and other transverse bumps. Shakers add heavy 18-inch wheels, which are equipped with all versions, including the base Sport.
I change to Changan – and it’s as if a skating rink has passed along a dead road. The suspension is so successfully cracked down on multi-caliber potholes that at some point you simply stop paying attention to the quality of the coating. It’s necessary to go around exceptionally large pits, and it is better to prepare for such maneuvers in advance. In speed slalom CS55 is not strong. Even though the steering wheel is informative, the deepest banks, indecent early demolition and a panicky stabilization system completely discourage the desire to scam.

Scanty official information does not allow to rely on the modernization of the chassis during last year's update CS55.
